Patriots, The New England Football Kind

patsThe Belichick/Brady Patriots are by far, the best team ever in the NFL if such a comparison can be made. No other team comes close….12 Division titles….9 AFC Title games….. 6 Super Bowls…. 4 Championships…..1 Undefeated season. Montana, Bradshaw, Aikman-era teams don’t have 1/2 those stats…… Belichick is the intellectual master coach of the game and the biggest reason the Patriots beat the Ravens & Seahawks last season. His brilliant legal alignment vs the Ravens not only resulted in Patriots scores but actually gained 15yds on the field from Harbaugh’s unsportsman-like penalty….In the Super Bowl, Carroll (on game-time video) says “He’s got the run covered”. “He” is Belichick, who had also pounded the pass play Pete called into his defense’s heads all week. Butler who intercepted “the pass” said “I saw it all the way.”

+The Pats lost one Super Bowl on an absolutely ludicrous play the “helmet catch”.  If you watch the replay (You-tube) you will see that the Giants Offensive Line committed at least 5 holding infractions on the play. And of course the catch itself was probably the greatest fluke in Super Bowl history as well. (Last year’s Seahawk’s catch near the EZ is probably #2.)  There were also the play-off-ending injuries to their top receivers Welker one year, and Gronkowski in the (16-0) perfect season, that killed them in the Super Bowl. But hey!…That all goes with the territory. Other teams of course can rightfully make similar claims…but not added to the stats listed above.  I’m just sayin.. the stats gap could be even wider. Overwhelming dominance.

Belichick had only one serious brain fart I can think of, and it cost the Pats Super Bowl 46 in my opinion. He played Gronkowski injured for 45 of NE’s 62 offensive plays and he was thrown to three times. I screamed at my TV to take him out after the first 5 minutes. But nope! It was a disaster. The Giants had spent a lot of time preparing for Gronk cuz of Belichick’s injury reports. All that training would have been wasted and the look w/o him would have bamboozled the Giants. (Though I shudder to think a future murderer might have been the hero in Gronk’s place. But then again if so he might never have gone the way he did.)

As for comparisons the Terry Bradshaw Steelers are #2 in my book. That was a great team. 4 Super Bowls in 6 years. Man for man…every facet of the game ..they would be the most dangerous to today’s Patriots. And credit must go to the Browns and Packers of past decades when it was different game. Alas, one-on-one we’ll never know.

In the end, all any team can do is beat the team in front of them. And nobody’s done it anywhere near as well as the Belichick/Brady Patriots. Nowhere’s near.
