Confucian Confusion

I not sure but I might be a Confucian, an adherent of Confucius’ ideals. Confucius was born about 550 BC in China. He was a giant imposing man, it is said at least 6’10”. I haven’t studied a lot about him cuz his earliest biography was written centuries after his death and I am a skeptic.

Evidently he was a political philosopher, secular, and foremost a teacher. His objective was cultural harmony and peace thru education. He lived in the time of Emperors, absolute despots by birthright; also making him a royalist.

Confucius was dedicated to the importance of observing ritual. By ritual he meant strictly respecting traditions, customs, ancestors and of course the authority of the Emperor and protocols of officialdom and the class system

Today in 2020 we might call “rituals”: Laws.

Confucius was also dedicated to the concept of moral rule which began at the top, with the Emperor. All authority ruling with wisdom, compassion and humanity toward all of his subjects. This was achieved by observing ritual.

Today we might call “moral rule”: Justice.

Confucius thought that even the emperor, along with all authorities, should be indoctrinated with the moral principles of justice and law by his teachers

The wisdom that the two should go hand and hand is critical to creating harmony thru benevolent dictatorship; pretty hard to come by in the capitalist world.

One must bear in mind that in 500BC China royal rule was ruthless and savage, a plethora of human rights crimes and injustice by today’s standards. Most Chinese were of the nameless variety. I imagine people like Confucius traveled in a fairly small elite circle.
