The Kids On the Bridge, Cambodia Khmer

We are feeding about 30 Kids on the Bridge per night since our return a couple of weeks ago. Donations have fallen dramatically as the tourist numbers are greatly diminished in “low season”. It’s hot here, about 100 during the day. The bridge is a very pleasant place to be at 8:00 in the evening. Best gig in the world!

I am teaching the kids more songs and have decided to push those who currently do not sing but only sit there waiting for their free meal. What I do is make them wait. The girls, about 12-15 in number are the singers and generally well-behaved. They have fun. Most of the boys are more savage and don’t sing.

They no longer bring their plastic sniffing bags onto the bridge cuz they know I frown on it. But you can smell them five feet away. I explain this to the tourists. Glue-sniffing is quite horrific; some of them are downright creepy. Winning their respect is difficult and they can be a menace at times. They are the hard part of the Kids on the Bridge cuz I know most of them are doomed to lose and die young. Eventually I take them for their noodles. But they know I’m serious about them singing and their social behavior cuz I’m a little hard on them.
